The insulations used in these jackets are made to be extremely light as well as warm. Down, in particular, has the highest warmth to weight ratio of any insulation type used today. The lightweight puffy nature of these materials also makes them extremely compressible, making them great for travel or stuffing in a backpack while at school. This quality also makes them perfect as layering pieces under more waterproof jackets and shells on extremely cold days.

Although many of these jackets share the same qualities, there are performance differences between the down and synthetic insulations used. While down is the lighter and warmer of the two, synthetic insulations maintain some of their insulating capabilities when wet, whereas down does not. In short, these puffy jackets are great outerwear pieces for all ages in cool to cold dry weather, or as a mid layer when the weather really gets bad.
