As parents, we’ve all experienced the unexpected growth spurt where it seems like nothing fits. Luckily, when it comes to kids’ snow gear, there’s no need to panic. Many top kid ski and snowboard brands have designed clever growth systems that allow jackets and pants to expand by an inch or two as your little one grows, extending the life of their snow gear.
You can find extendable tech in some of our favorite brands:
Obermeyer’s Toddler iGrow System and Teen Extended Wear System
Burton’s Room to Grow
Spyder’s Small to Tall
Columbia’s Outgrow
Patagonia’s Grow-Fit
686’s Youth Evolution System
Helly Hansen Extendable Length
How to Extend Your Kid's Snow Jacket and Pants
What You'll Need:
A pair of scissors or a seam ripper
A few minutes
Step 1
Check the inside of the jacket or pants for instructions on how your specific grow system works. Most instructions are near the tag along the back, inside the jacket or pants. Sometimes, the instructions for jackets are located on the inside, near the main zipper.
Step 2
Turn the jacket sleeves or pant cuffs inside out and locate the colored thread. This is typically three or four inches above the cuff. The thread will be a bright color so that it doesn’t blend in with the normal threading of the item.
Step 3
Use scissors or a seam ripper to cut and remove the colored thread. Repeat on the other side, and your kids are ready to go!
With how quickly kids grow, features that help their gear last a little longer can make a big difference. So, whether you're shopping for something new or crossing your fingers that last season's outfit still fits, take a peek at the tags for these cool grow systems that can save you time, money, and a few headaches. More importantly, they let you focus on what really matters: making memories and enjoying the great outdoors together.
