Not ready to see your delicious food that you've spent hours cooking that morning sit untouched on your child's plate this holiday? Thanksgiving food can be strange and boring to children (stuffing?)--which is why we've found some kid-friendly, Thanksgiving-appropriate recipes from Parenting.com which are sure to be a big hit for dinner at the kids table--and the rest of your guests are sure to sneak a bite (or two). Say your thanks and dive right in to these tasty recipes for kids!

Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry "Ice Cream" Mashed Potatoes

How kids can help: Mixing, and taste-testing, all three variations of potatoes.

What you need:

Sweet potatoes 3 medium sweet potatoes 2 Tbsp. creamer 2 Tbsp. maple syrup 1 Tbsp. brown sugar 1/2 Tsp. vanilla

Red or white potatoes 6 Red potatoes or 3 medium white potatoes 3 Tbsp. milk 2 Tbsp. sour cream or plain Greek yogurt Sea salt to taste

Chocolate flavored potatoes White potatoes (use a scoop of the above white mashed potatoes) 1 Tbsp. milk 1 Tsp. Hot chocolate mix

For each variation, peel and cube potatoes. Boil in water, until tender, about 20 minutes. Add ingredients as listed for each flavor and mix. Remember when mashing potatoes, that you need a thick enough consistency to "scoop".

For the White Potatoes- additional milk or sour cream can be added as needed. Also, before serving add a dab of light butter.

Scoops can be formed with an ice cream scoop for a serving dish or for individual servings use a melon scoop.

Just for Fun: Serve mashed potato scoops to kids in a flat-bottom ice cream cone.

Kids Turkey Muffins

Kids can help: Each child can build their own turkey muffin.

What you need:
  • Pumpkin muffins
  • Red apple
  • Green apple
  • Sliver of carrot
  • Squeezable icing -- eyes
From each apple, cut a slice from the side of the apple. Set flat and cut squared-off, tapered feathers. Cut a small beak from a thin slice of carrot. Make a slit in the end of a green grape and dab off excess moisture. Insert beak into grape. Poke small ends of feathers into muffin and set head on muffin, resting on the muffin paper. Once assembled, add tiny dot eyes with icing.

Turkey Nuggets

How kids can help: Cut out turkey rounds, dip in breading.

What you need:
  • Slices of turkey
  • 1 Tbsp. Milk
  • 2 Tbsp. Honey
  • Panko bread crumbs
Using a small, round cookie cutter, cut out little medallions of turkey. Mix milk and honey in a small bowl. Put bread crumbs in another bowl. Dip medallions in honey mixture, then crumbs, set on baking pan. Broil on low for a few minutes, each side, until slightly golden. Serve with honey or honey mustard sauce.
